Tuesday 24 April 2018 7-11 PM - Lecture and Discussion
"Hospice and Other Choices for End of Life Care for Pets" led by renowned local Veterinarian Dr. Amir Shanan
Dr. Shanan, DVM, CHPV (Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Veterinarian) has been in private practice in Chicago since 1985. After several years of practicing veterinary medicine, he realized that many loving pet parents had nowhere to go for the care and support they needed when their cherished companions approached the end of life. That prompted him to start offering in-home medical and consultation services for geriatric and seriously ill companion animals. Dr. Shanan has helped thousands of pets and their families make the end of life a meaningful and cherished experience by providing information, nonjudgmental support, and guidance in making the most difficult decisions. He is often described as a “mix of philosopher, ethicist, counselor and veterinarian.” Dr Shanan is recognized nationally and internationally as a pioneer and leader in the emerging field of animal hospice and palliative care. Dr. Shanan is the Founder of the International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care and the main editor of the first textbook on animal end of life care, published in 2017. He will share his approaches in trying to help fulfill the needs of pets and their families at times of transition and answer questions the audience might have on the many care options available.
Refreshments following the lecture and discussion to provide time for additional dialogues will be generously provided by Dessert First.
Please reserve your seat by 12 April 2018 by email to [email protected] or by phone to 708 638 6813.
A $5-dollar donation is requested for the 501c3 compassionforpets.org to assist families unable to pay for end of life care for their companion animals.

Friday 6 April 2018 7-11 PM – Storytelling
Join us for an evening of personal stories written and performed by David Boyle. Boyle is the winner of the Audience Favorite award at the 2017 Elgin Fringe Festival. Boyle has performed his one-man shows in numerous Chicago venues as well as at the Minnesota and St. Louis Fringe Festivals.
Here's a sampling of what critics have to say:
"At turns hilarious, thought-provoking and touching, he is a wonderful storyteller who showed his mettle even before he got into the meat of the show, in which he introduced each segment with made-up hymn titles. The audience hung on every word..." - Pioneer Press, Minneapolis
"I was raised Catholic so the stories and songs from the Catholic tradition felt familiar to me, but whatever your tradition, these well-told stories will move you, tickle your funny bone, and make you wonder at the accidentals of this thing called life." - cherryandspoon.com
"Hitting his pace like the writer of book you just can't put down, Boyle crafts his stories from vivid, sensory observations of the details that make an ordinary experience memorable. Boyle's tales reveal a well-developed discipline of structure that would hold up to even the driest analysis. Though to an audience, they just seem fascinating." - The Elgin Review
